One day, this world will end. Hopefully, that day will not be today but in the distant future. I hope...
The greatest threats of human extinction recorded in the annals of history is not war or any Draconian act incited by man himself but something that is so little that its indiscernible by the eye – disease. The Black Death, Cholera, and now COVID – such is the list of pathogens that have ransacked the value of this world. Pillaged ground where millions of soldier are now resting upon.
COVID, as described by the World Health Organization, is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
I refuse to believe that we, who are liberty-hungry, are being subservient to such a little fiend. As covid advances to the deep echelons of our well-being, we and our ramshackle country retreat to accompany. With this predicament, there are no easy solutions, no shortcut. Countries have a hard time balancing the livelihood and medical security of their citizens. Covid continually exacerbates our differences. It finds way to exploit the insecurities of man and further divide the distance between people. The Philippines accentuates this fact. Now, I ask of you friends, what is next?
Should we give up? Should we submit? Should we hung our heads low and grovel like pigs? No! Don't let this pathetic fear beleaguer you. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate nor incompetent. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Do not fret, we can live through this, for we are Filipinos; we keep moving forward until our enemies are destroyed. Even if the whole world and Nature as its accomplice decides to rebel against us. We will still survive. Why? Because we will persevere.
I implore you. If you don't want to die. If you don't want your family to grieve a futile demise. For once, let us not be belligerent. For once, let us follow. Realize the danger our world is currently in. Beware, be aware. If we live with continual dissidence, all the sacrifices achieved would be in vain. Frontliners willingly relinquish their future, dreams, and life because they die believing that we, the living, will find meaning in their lives. They believe and subsequently we should also believe that this cruel chapter of our history would end and that what awaits us is a future worthy of our strength.
Yes, something is apparent. It is pitifully evident that we are weak. We are reliant on others. Even though we are painfully puny compared to the scale of this massive world, we must no be debilitated by our own inability. For once, let us not depend on others. For once, let us defend for ourselves. We must act as our own saviour. I hope that this weakness will make us all wise. As covid continues to sharpen its fangs, we should also continue to sharpen our wisdom. I repeat, we are weak. It is with this same impotence that gave us our unlimited potential for evolution. Currently, we are nothing. That is why we can become anything.
